Anniversary Day will feature special kick back pricing -- 40¢ kolaches all day long!

A Lasting Legacy

Kolache Founder John Banks has seen a lot of changes between September 13, 1982, when he and his late wife Jerilyn opened the doors to their first Kolache Factory store in Houston, to 2022, where 60 locations operate in nine states.

Although the signature (and secret) Czechoslovakian dough recipe Banks perfected back in the early 80’s remains, the tasty fruit, meat, and cheese fillings have evolved. The 1982 menu featured 15 different kolache flavors, and today there are at least 25 different varieties, ranging from the traditional fruit and cheese to flavors like Bar-B-Que Brisket, Pepperoni Pizza, and Sausage, Jalapeno, and Cheese. A few originals have dropped off over years too, like Mincemeat and Amaretto Cheesecake.  There is also a new kolache flavor featured every month. In September, the Kolache of the Month is called The Millennial - a kolache filled with fresh avocado, crisp bacon, scrambled eggs, and shredded cheese -- and was created by a kolache fan in St. Louis. Every year, fans, employees, and franchise store owners compete in the Kolache Olympics to bring new flavors to the menu.

Franchising became the future of Kolache Factory back in 1982 and remains that way to this day, with entrepreneurs who love the product and are committed to the brand, signing on to bring kolaches to foodies from California to South Carolina!

Kolaches, pronounced koh-lah-chees, were born in Czechoslovakia centuries ago when a young girl nabbed some soft, sweet bread dough from her mom, added plums and tossed it in the oven. Her dad grabbed one for a snack and when he took a bite, the hot plum juice made him circle like a wheel in delight. The Czech word for wheel is “kola” — so the kolache was born. It became a tasty and beloved treat throughout Eastern Europe and arrived in America in the 1850s when Czech settlers came to Texas. By the 1900s, the Czech immigrants were holding yearly celebrations to honor their beloved culinary treat — the kolache.
