Katy-based Kolache Factory is stepping up for those on the front lines fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Its two initiatives are working to feed medical workers and first responders. Kolache Factory Cares: Fueling the Front Line lets medical workers and first responders stop at a location and pick up a free breakfast that includes a coffee and a sausage and cheese or fruit kolache each or any day during April. They just need to present their medical or work IDs. They can get the meals through takeout, drive-thru or call ahead and have it delivered curbside. Online orders are not available at this time, however.

“Kolaches are nutritious, hearty and easy to eat on the go. We know these folks caring for the sick don’t have much time to sit and eat,” said Dawn Nielsen, Kolache Factory chief operating officer. “Our variety of fruit and meat and cheese kolaches offer a high energy meal that hits the spot and gets them back to what they need to do.”

Kolache Factory Cares: Adopt a Front Line Hero invites companies, organizations and individuals to place paid orders to give to front line heroes they want to recognize for doing life-saving work in the Houston area. Examples could be hospital, clinic, police, fire or paramedic workers. Anyone who would like to Adopt a Front Line Hero should call their local Kolache Factory store to set it up.

The Sugar Land Skeeters led the way and on April 7 purchased 1,000 kolaches to feed 500 staffers at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.

“These specialized medical professionals have been under an enormous amount of stress and strain and working excessively long hours away from their families,” Nielsen said. “We are proud and grateful the Sugar Land Skeeters chose us as the preferred breakfast for these hardworking men and women, as part of our Adopt a Front Line Hero program.”

She said giving kolaches to people that are helping the sick and risking their own lives is just a small way to show appreciation. Nielsen called the Adopt a Front Line Hero idea a “triple win.”

“When the Skeeters called to place their order and didn’t ask for a discount, I said, ‘Oh bless you!’ They knew that they were not only helping the hospital workers but helping the restaurant too,” she said in a statement. “It’s just a great example of how this community is stepping in to help each other out and show their appreciation —because we are all in this together.”

While Nielsen referred to present sales at Kolache Factory sales as “awful,” down by nearly 50 percent, she is proud to serve those that are serving Houston’s communities in critical ways.
